So Jesus was saying to those Jews who had believed Him, "If you continue in My word, then you are truly disciples of Mine; and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free." (John 8:31, 32)
Jews who had believed in Him. Believing in Jesus is a starting point. It is the beginning of a new life in Him. It is not the end, and by itself, means nothing.
If you continue in My word, then you are truly disciples of Mine. This is our ongoing relationship with Jesus. We believe in Him and listen for His word to perform it. His word can come from the Scriptures or through the Holy Spirit. Over time, as we continue, we will become more familiar with His ways and goals. Disciples are followers.
You will know the truth. This would be knowing the truth about Jesus, the truth about yourself, and the truth about humanity. It means gaining a perspective that guides your decisions and steps.
The truth will make you free. The truth will MAKE you free. The truth does not set you free; the truth makes you free. This is the freedom to make correct choices without fear or compulsion. It is a freedom that exists in difficult times. It is a freedom that exists even in the most dire circumstances, such as being a prisoner. It is the freedom to choose death for the sake of the Kingdom.
